For those not familiar with the Toddy system, it utilizes cold water extract a coffee concentrate from the R&G coffee. The water steeps for about 12 hours, resulting in a thick concentrate of coffee. Its marketed as being much lower in acidity than traditional brewing processes.

When you want a cup of coffee, simply add the appropriate amount of coffee concentrate and add hot water......bam!

Has anyone tried this? Would you agree that its smoother and less acidic?

With the summertime approaching, we actually tried this at work the other day as an alternative for our customers. We decided to try a french Zimbabwe, which was actually clean and smooth when kept cold. Some of the characteristics that made this origin not friendly to some pallettes when brewed hot were actually kind of nice through the toddy.

I wasn't terribly impressed with the combination of hot water and cold extract, though. To me, it seemed like warmish brown water. Kind of close to what some people are used to making at home with their drip pots, but that's about it Smile.

But for iced coffee drinks, it really has a good thing going for it - provided that you're patient enough to let it brew fully.

We tried for it regular coffee. Found it disgusting. All the highs were gone. Few lows present either. It's one of those things where most of what they say is right but not what you actually care about. Is it smooth? Yup! Is it low acid? Sure 'nuf. But it's HORRIBLE. Stale, Musty tasting swill. I would never ever recommend a Toddy for hot coffee. We don't often drink cold coffee in any format so I can't say if it's negative appeal would carry over to those styles.

We actually use the toddy process at our cafe, though we only use the concentrate for iced coffees.
i can't imagine trying it hot. i could see where the taste would end up flat.
iced, however is good, less acidic than hot coffee that has been cooled and more concentrated than cool drip coffee that has been iced down.

I can see that. Especially with some milk and sugar thrown in it should make a very good iced drink..... And handy!
